Perfume ooh ooh yeah
I'll adorn your day
with sweet scents
With each step you take
You'll recall my name
Seeping in your breath
Hovering at the tip of your nose
Imprinted in your heart
As the sillage lingers on
So sweet, the scent of my longing for you
Holding all my vivid traces
On your wrist, I'm
On your collar, I'm
Leaving my trails
So you won't ever forget
Delving into
the slightest sigh
Every time is paradise yeah
Even the air in your room
My feelings for you permeate
Your warmth becomes mine
Every time is paradise
Even after a long while
There's no way you'll get bored
It should be your first time
Just be honest baby
Tonight
I love you being in all my moments
Tonight, drawn in with no way out
On your wrist, I'm
On your collar, I'm
Leaving my trails
So you won't ever forget
Delving into
the slightest sigh

baby I'm comfortable with you
(You know that I'm)
and you're comfortable with me
(I know that you are)
(baby I'm baby I'm)
baby I'm comfortable with you
(You know that I'm)
and you're comfortable with me
(I know that you are)
When our eyes meet
It will all be clear
yeah yeah that's me
짙은 농도에 (oh yeah)
(Love yeah)
yeah yeah that's me
The intense notes
Got 'em light-headed
Even your breath is scented
When they see you
They all can tell
Drip Drop (Drip Drop)
yeah one drop
Drip Drop (Drip Drop)
Leave my mark
In your memory (Leave it)
24 hour whoa whoa!
As time goes by
It grows more distinct
Lingering around you
24 hour whoa
Hold tight
Hold tight
The night we bare our hearts
oh Feels like I'm well immersed
I know for certain
My senses are awakened
Once again deeply imprinted
On your wrist, I'm
On your collar, I'm
Leaving my trails
So you won't ever forget
Delving into
every moment

Postscript
For the longest time I'd toyed with the idea of translating Korean lyrics into both Mandarin and English, but I never really had the motivation to follow through. This week's tutoring session finally gave me the push.
I was preparing for R's poetry lesson, and while the usual straight-to-the-point analysis works fine, it felt a little dry to me. I wanted something to liven things up. That day, we were doing Carol Ann Duffy's "Valentine", a poem full of imagery and metaphor, and I thought it might be fun to pair it with a pop song. I scrolled through playlists and compilations with no luck, until I spotted the second song on my pinned list: "Perfume", the NCT track that first dragged me into the fandom. I've listened to it so many times I could practically reenact the MV. Like Duffy's poem, it's written in the first person to a lover, full of sensory language. Perfect match.
Since R can read Korean and listens to plenty of K-pop herself (she actually knew NCT way before I did), I briefly considered using the Korean lyrics directly. But because our class is conducted in English, I knew we couldn't really spend that much time unpacking them. My next idea was to just grab the Genius English translation to save time. After rereading it, though, I found the language too choppy and soulless for a lit class. So… yeah, I ended up doing my own translation.
After finishing the work, I remembered that I had just watched a video on paratexts—about how titles, intros, and framing shape our understanding—so I decided to have a little fun with it. I pasted my translation into the handout, and removed both the poem's and the song's titles, which don't appear in the text itself. R would read both works "blind," take guesses at the titles, and then we'd talk about how much missing context changes interpretation.
In class, R immediately recognized that the second text had to be song lyrics based on the rhyme, rhythm, and stanza breaks. But her guesses on the song itself were hilarious: she kept insisting it was originally Mandarin, either by Hebe Tien, Mayday, or The Chairman. At one point she even swore the lyrics must be about BL. I just smirked and said, "Sure, why not?" while secretly staging a whole imaginary DJJ skit in my head.
Even when we hit the line "baby I'm comfortable with you", she said it sounded ridiculously familiar but still couldn't place it. It wasn't until five minutes before the end of class (after we'd finished the poem too) that I finally revealed the answer, and it seemed unbelievable to her that it's such a well written song.
She was half right about the titles tho, guessing the song as "Perfume" but thinking the poem was called "Lethal Lover". Honestly, not too far off, since the word "lethal" does appear in the last stanza; on top of that, she explained that The Chairman has a track with that title. (The Chairman had been there for the whole session…)
That 90-minute class turned out to be one of my favorite teaching experiences. The pairing of texts, and the odd little synchronicities between me and R, felt like pure serendipity.
Though not planned, while editing the lyrics afterward, I let a bit of ambition creep in. I added a Mandarin version, which turned it into my first-ever trilingual lyrics post. I'm not trying to reinvent myself as a color-coded lyrics blogger (though yes, the colors I used match the DJJ album's Box Ver. design). I just wanted to document what a delightfully strange lesson it was.
Hope you find it fun or useful, and of course, I have to close with a shoutout: may DOJAEJUNG comeback soon. 🩸🫗
